Big Lecture Halls and Intimidating Professors Not a UIUC Problem!

Big Lecture Halls and Intimidating Professors Not a UIUC Problem! After my first class of the day, ten minutes separated me from a front row seat to my first chemistry lecture. Because students usually arrive at least fifteen minutes early, I was already late and out of luck. Throughout high school, all that I heard about college general chemistry is that it was a pre-med’s biggest pain. After frantically weaving my way through the Quad (trying not to get hit by cyclists) I finally entered Noyes Laboratory. Speed walking my way through the building to the huge lecture hall, the sound of my footsteps were muffled by the echo of people settling into their seats. Upon entering the room, I looked up and saw a sea of students organized by small, green chairs and tiny desks. On the opposite side, the professor stood behind large lab tables and in front of a wall of black chalkboards. Finding a front row seat was unlikely at that point! Sitting towards the back of the room and looking forward, I was overwhelmed. The number of students in this single cla ss was greater than the number of students who attended my high school. After the clock struck one, a loud, confident voice took control of the room’s commotion: “Welcome to Chemistry 102 lecture. My name is professor Huang. Let’s begin.” Noyes Laboratory, Main Quad Chemistry Lecture Hall Credit: Google Images Large lecture halls at U of I is almost unavoidable, and it is one of the main concerns of prospective students. The intimidation my peers and I felt after the first chemistry lecture was immense. But, as the week progressed, I started using the academic resources the school offers, and I also learned to walk a little faster. I felt my intimidation of big lecture halls and professors fall away. Here are some academic campus aids I wish I knew more about when I was college searching last year. Wow, time flies! Office Hours  On the first day of class, your professor or teacher’s assistant (TA) will tell you their name, email address, and office hours. An instructor’s job during office hours is to simply sit in their office and wait for students to visit them with any questions or concerns. Not only are office hours a great way to ask questions about material you are having trouble with, they are also an easy way to make sure the professor/TA knows your name (especially if you’ll be needing a letter of recommendation for graduate schools). For me, visiting my professor during office hours made the teacher seem more friendly. That personal connection made me more comfortable with the large lecture setting. Campus Learning Centers There are many campus learning centers for various subjects. For example, the Chemistry Learning Center offers help for general chemistry students, and the MCB (Molecular Cellular Biology) Learning Center does the same for students enrolled in MCB classes. TAs usually host the learning center help sessions so students can get assistance with class material. There are also textbooks, computers and manuals available for your use. Talk to you advisor (AKA your new BFF) Every student has their own advisor designated through their specific college. For MCB majors, students are allowed to switch advisors or talk to their advisor at any time (within designated hours, of course) about anything! No matter what you’re struggling with, academic or otherwise, your advisor’s job is to help you succeed. Collaborate With Your Peers! Let’s be honest: College is full of students with Type A personalities which can sometimes make the learning environment feel tense. One way I counteract this vibe is to help students around me by reminding them of due dates and studying with them in groups. If you help your peers, your peers will help you! Plus, no matter which profession you choose, collaboration is a key skill employers look for.   I’d tell a good chemistry joke here, but all the good ones Argon. Sorry! I couldn’t resist. Don’t forget to leave any questions, suggestions, and other helpful tips down below. Happy studying! Fiza   Fiza Class of 2022 My major is Molecular and Cellular Biology (more commonly and lovingly known as MCB) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I'm on the pre-med trackâ€"I’ve dreamed of becoming a doctor since I could spell the word!

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of these treatments and how well children, or caretakers of children, manage their asthma. According to DePaola, Roberts, Blaiss, Frick, and McNeal (1997), it was found that mothers and children influence each others perception of the medications, and should both be targeted for intervention. One of the most important steps in the management of asthma is proper education to the children or caretaker. This education may include medications, peak flow meters, or proper use of inhalers. Literature Review As stated earlier, some asthma medications include long acting bronchodilators, short acting bronchodilators, or inhaled corticosteroids. Long acting bronchodilators should be used every day, and are used to control asthma. Some examples of long acting bronchodilators include Formoterol, Salmeterol, or Symbicort. Short acting bronchodilators should be used for quick relief or before exercise, and they are also commonly known as rescue medications. They act by quickly opening the airways during an attack, start working after inhalation, and last two to four hours. Some examples of rescue medications include Albuterol, Metaproterenol, and Levalbuterol. Inhaled corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation or reducing mucus production in asthma patients. Examples of steroids include Pulmicort, Qvar, Flovent, etc. Peak flow meters are very important in the care of asthma patients. A peak flow meter tells of the patients ability to blow air out of their lungs. It is crucial for proper instruction to be given to caregivers and patients on how to use the peak flow meter. As stated by Paymon, Riley, and Miller (2018), Such interventions allow caregivers to have improved perception of control of their childs asthma and increased confidence when caring for the child. Peak flow meters can also determine how well asthma is being treated or if their condition is worsening. When given a peak flow meter, the patient will be instructed to blow out a fast breath, as if blowing out candles on a birthday cake. This fast burst of air is known as the patients peak expiratory flow, or PEF. The patients normal PEF range will be determined and marked on the flow meter by a red, yellow, or green color marker. Based on these color markers, the child or caregiver will know if they should continue current therapy, ta ke a rescue medication, or seek emergency attention. When given the peak flow meter, the child should also be given a diary. The diarys purpose is to chart the PEFs every day and list how the patient is feeling in order for the medical team to determine if the proper management of the patients asthma is being achieved. The most common method used to treat asthmatic symptoms is a metered dose inhaler. It is very common that many children are not taught the correct way to use their inhaler, which leaves the child getting little to no benefit at all from their medications. To receive optimal dosage of the medication, the patient must shake or prime their MDI, take in a deep breath, and then hold their breath for at least ten seconds. Many children may have trouble actuating the inhaler and inhaling at the same time, so many are also given a spacer. A spacer holds the medication so that optimal dosage may be achieved. A child using an MDI without a spacer may not be achieving optimal particle deposition into the airways. Benidictis and Selvaggio (2003) state, It is traditionally accepted that particles larger than 5? µm are mostly deposited in the oropharynx and upper airway as a result of inertial impaction; particles ranging from in the 1â€Å"5? µm are efficiently deposited in the lower respira tory tract (respirable fraction); particles less than 1? µm are inspired and then expired without ever settling on the airway. Conclusion Parents, or caregivers, play a crucial role in the management of asthma in pediatrics. It is important to thoroughly instruct the parents and patients all that is needed to know about asthma medications, MDIs, and peak flow meters. They need to be assisted in a management plan and know when and where to go in case of an exacerbation of a pediatric patients condition. Many pediatric patients conditions may decline due to improper treatments. This will increase their amount of doctor visits or hospital stays, increasing stress on the patient or family, and lead to further worsening of the patients condition.

Human fossil findings in Indonesia Free Essays

Indonesia is an of import state to analyze about human beginnings and development, due to many sites within cardinal Java, such as Sangiran and Ngandong which account for 75 per centum of the world’s Homo erectus findings ( Frederick A ; Worden, 2011 ) . Development of Homo sapiens in Indonesia has shown Indonesian archipelago was inhabited by Homo erectus, which were known as the â€Å"Java Man† , between 1.5 million old ages ago and resent as 35,000 old ages ago. We will write a custom essay sample on Human fossil findings in Indonesia or any similar topic only for you Order Now About 800,000 old ages ago, some of the earliest hominids of the archipelago made tools, constructed boats, used fire, and had a linguistic communication ( Fredrick A ; Worden, 2011 ) .Furthermore, about 600,000 old ages ago, these hominids have developed a more complex and civilised civilization which was scattering throughout Indonesia ( Fredrick A ; Worden, 2011 ) . Patterns of development started to organize through hunting, fishing, and making communities which depended on tools made of stuffs such as shell, wood, bamboo, and rock ( Fredrick A ; Worden, 2011 ) . The most recent finds in human dodos, were in 2004 on the island of Flores, Indonesia, which is located between Bali and Timor. Flores, Indonesia is one of many Wallacean islands, which lie E of Wallace ‘s Line and west of Lydekker ‘s Line.Teams of archaeologists found an wholly new type of hominid species at the Liang Bua digging site, which has since been named Homo floresiensis. This type of hominid has been considered a new hominid type that had locally evolved, was a well smaller hominid, and was assorted between Homo erectus and modern worlds ( Fredrick A ; Worden, 2011 ) . Homo floresiensis was a dwarf homo, which lived at Liang Bua between at least 95,000 and 13,000 old ages ago. The species was believed to hold used rock tools, fire, and hunted little animate beings found on Flores ( Foley, 2005 ) . The freshly found remains had a skull that appeared to belong to a hominine species, perchance belonging to a kid sing its size, but one time the staying parts of its skull and dentitions were found and they concluded it did non belong to a kid, but an grownup. The remains of this hominines partial skeleton was found and, the likes of which had ne’er been discovered before.Today, this specimen is referred to as Liang Bua 1 ( Smithsonian Institution, 2014 ) . The earliest modern worlds coexisted with their hominid relations for 1000s of old ages, although there is no grounds of this at Liang Bua ( Fredrick A ; Warden, 2011 ) . Although Indonesia is highly diverse ethnically, with more than 350 distinguishable cultural groups that are recognized, along with 13 linguistic communications spoken by 1 million talkers ( Fredrick A ; Warden, 2011 ) . Human in-migration to the islands of Indonesia occurred as long ago as 3000BC, and was uninterrupted for about 3000 old ages. Peoples immigrated to Indonesia in little groups and established independent civilisations all around the seashore, on occasion coexisting with the hostile posterities of â€Å"Java Man† ( Frederick A ; Worden, 2011 ) . In the following several millenary Indonesia developed cultural features that still exist today such as rice agribusiness, ceramic and metal engineering and the enlargement of long distance seal travel and trade. Earlier dwellers used horticultural economic system in which they grew cereals, created clayware and rock tools during the period 2500 to 500 B.C ( Glasscase, 2011 ) . During the period between 500 B.C. and A.D. 500, as the people of the archipelago progressively interacted with South and East Asia, metals and domesticated farm animate beings were introduced ( Glasscase, 2011 ) . The Dongson civilization, which originated in Vietnam and southern China around 1000 BC, spread to Indonesia, conveying irrigated rice turning techniques, husbandry accomplishments ; buffalo forfeit rites, bronze casting, the usage of raising megaliths, and ikat weaving methods. By 700 BC, Indonesia was dotted with lasting small towns where life was linked to rice production ( Alone Planet, 2014 ) . These early colonists were animists, believing all objects had a life force or psyche. The liquors of the dead had to be honored, as they could still assist the life and influence natural events, while evil liquors had to be warded off with offerings and ceremonials. As there was a belief in the hereafter, arms and utensils were left in grave for usage in the following universe. By the first century AD, little lands, were little more than aggregations of small towns with a leader, which evolved from Java ( Lonely Planet, 2014 ) . The island’s changeless hot temperature, abundant rainfall and volcanic dirt were ideal for wet field rice cultivation. The organisation this required may explicate why the Javanese developed a apparently more successful society than the other islands. It is non certain how Hinduism and Buddhism arrived in Indonesia. The oldest plants of Hindu art in Indonesia were found in Sulawesi and Sumatra in 3rdcentury AD ( Fredrick A ; Worden, 1992 ) . One theory suggests that the development tribunals invited Brahman priests from India to watch over on religious and ritual forfeits, thereby supplying position to those in control ( Fredrick and Worden, 1992 ) . In earlier lands, the Hindu-Buddhist land of Sriwijaya rose in Sumatra ( an Indonesian island ) during the seventh century AD ( Lonely Planet, 2014 ) . It was the first major Indonesian sea power able to command the trade in Southeast Asia by being located on the Strait of Melaka. The Buddhist Sailendra dynasty and the Hindu Mataram dynasty flourished in Central Java ( the largest Indonesian island ) between the 8th and 10th centuries ( Alone Planet, 2014 ) . While Sriwijaya’s wealth came from trade, Javanese lands like Mataram had human labour at their disposal and developed as agricultural societies. At the terminal of the tenth century, the Mataram land declined. The Centre of power shifted from Central to East Java and it was a period when Hinduism and Buddhism were united and when Javanese civilization began to come into its ain ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . A series of lands held until the 1294 rise of the Majapahit land, which grew during the reign of Hayam Wuruk from 1350 to 1389 ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . Its territorial enlargement can be credited to military commanding officer Gajah Mada, who helped the land claim control over the archipelago, claiming power over smaller lands and obtaining trading rights from them. After Hayam Wuruk’s decease in 1389, the land began a steady diminution ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . The first Islamic letterings found in Indonesia day of the month from the eleventh century. Islam foremost took clasp in northern Sumatra, ( a western Indonesian island ) where Arab bargainers had settled by the thirteenth century. From the 15th and 16th centuries, Indonesian swayers made Islam the province faith. By the fifteenth century, the trading land of Melaka ( a little Malaysian province ) was making the tallness of its power and had embraced Islam ( Lonely Planet, 2014 ) . Its influence strengthened the spread of Islam through the archipelago. By the clip of the prostration of the Majapahit land ( based on the island of Java ) in the early 1500s, many of its orbiter lands had already declared themselves independent Islamic provinces ( Alone Planet, 2014 ) . Much of their wealth came from trading spices, and Islam followed the trade routes across the archipelago. By the terminal of the sixteenth century, a new sea power had emerged on Sulawesi, which had been settled by Malay bargainers and whose kingdoms spread far beyond the part ( Alone Planet, 2014 ) . Get downing in 1602, the Dutch easy established themselves as swayers of Indonesia and finally laid the foundation of the Indonesian province, by taking advantage of the failing of the little lands that had replaced that of Majapahit ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . During 300 old ages of regulation, the Dutch developed the Netherlands East Indies into one of the universe ‘s richest colonial ownerships, pull outing natural resources through local elites but making small to overhaul Indonesia. By the terminal of the Dutch regulation and after many wars and lives taken, the Indonesian people wanted to stand entirely and go united. The Indonesian people started to have a Dutch instruction for the kids of the Indonesian elite, and with that came Western political thoughts of freedom and democracy ( Alone Planet, 2014 ) . However, the first thoughts of Indonesian patriotism came from Islamic motions. Despite Dutch repression, the nationalist motion found a incorporate voice. In a historic proclamation in 1928, the All Indonesia Youth Congress proclaimed it’s Youth Pledge, following the impressions of one national individuality, one state and one linguistic communication ( Alone Planet, 2014 ) . The conflict for independency wavered between warfare and diplomatic negotiations. Under the Linggarjati Agreement of November 1946, the Dutch recognized the Republican authorities and both sides agreed to work towards an Indonesian federation under a Dutch commonwealth ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . The understanding was shortly swept aside as war escalated. The Dutch mounted a big offense in July 1947, doing t he United Nations to step in ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . In February 1948 the Dutch launched another onslaught on the Republicans, interrupting the United Nations understanding. Under force per unit area from the United States, which threatened to retreat its postwar assistance to the Netherlands, the Dutch negotiated for independency. On December 27, 1949 the Indonesian flag was raised at Jakarta’s Istana Merdeka, and power was officially handed over ( Pearson Education, 2000-2014 ) . . Mentions Foley, J. Ethical Issues for Citizenship and Sustainability- myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theEthical Issues for Citizenship and Sustainability. Answer: What is the matter? The government has decided to create a group of teachers who are willing to provide the notes to the students who are unable to get the notes as they do not have the financial potentiality to visit school and receive the basic education for the betterment of their lives. Hence government has been planning to provide the platform to the students for getting the notes ready in hand with the help of the customi9ization of the notes that will be uploaded by the teachers. The government decides to create a group of teachers that would make notes or study materials for children. The study material would include the important topics and a client group would offer the funds required in producing them. The teachers would customize the lessons. The targeted students are the ones who are located in remote areas where there are no schools located. The government funding agencies suggested the study materials to be in multimedia format. It is quite difficult for the team to develop multimedia con tent. The funds required in order to produce a multimedia study material is very high and the content would not be accessible by every child. There are various reasons for which it is not possible to create a multimedia study material What are the issues? There are many issues that would interrupt the production of multimedia formatted study materials. The issues are as follows The group of teachers is just concerned of creating study materials only. The audio visual content could not be made by them. A different group has to be selected that would look after this aspect. This is quite difficult for a newly introduced organization to get so many people to help for this. In 20th century, in the world of multimedia there are still regions in India that have not been introduced to internet yet. They have no access to smart phones or internet. So introducing multimedia content would not be accessible by all types of students and from all parts of country. The fund required would be very high. Accessible multimedia is very costly to develop. The hardware requirements for Multimedia are CPU, Monitor, Video Grabbing Card, Sound Card, CD-Rom. The software requirements are Adobe CS4, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Fireworks, Gimp, Google Sketchup, Microsoft Frontpage and many more. These requirements are very essential to fulfill for applying multimedia. These would have a very high budget. The teachers presently have access to limited resources which will be required to produce study materials. Students also have access to very limited resources so it would be difficult to produce accessible multimedia study materials. The targeted students are those who can not attend school for some or the other reason. The disabilities faced by them are either distance problem or they can not go to school because they have to earn due to lack of earning source in their family. Who are affected? There would be various affects of the multimedia application. The targeted students would be affected if the system is badly designed or too costly for them to afford. If the materials are not prepared with utmost care it will get rejected by the students and the hard work would be useless. The teachers would also be affected if there is no sufficient opportunity to learn and receive promotion. If the system fails for any reason the government as well as the funding party will be affected. Everyone would be positive affected if the job is done with honesty and transparency and accepted by the targeted students. What are the ethical issues? Utilitarianism- the acts of utilitarianism states is the betterment of the society id s the main concern for the ethical law (Crane Matten, 2016). However, in case of using multimedia in the process the entire cost of the product rises which causes difficulties for the clients to get access to the much needed documents of the application hence the purpose of the project gets invalid. Deontological theory this act states that the motive of the duty must be ethical in nature in order to serve the dignity of the project (McCuen, 2016). But in case of using multimedia in the processing of the project the investors are trying to make profit out of the project which itself is an unethical fact for the project terminologies. Virtue theory- this theory states that the fact of going out of the boundaries to stick to the ethical point of view is the main code of conduct that is to be followed in the processing of the project (Pope Vasquez, 2016). Virtual ethics is not taken int consideration in this case as the investors and the manufacturers is bothered about the profit making concept through the services that are going to be provided. Contract theory- according to the contact theory the probation of the contract plays a vital role in the processing of the project. This proceedings that are made must be taken into consideration that the deal that is made is sufficient to provide the ethical services to the student that are really needy and do not have the ethical scarcity for the manufacturer regarding the manufacturing of the application (Congress, 2017). What can be done about it? There are various measures that can be taken in order to carry out the process smoothly. The measures are. The clients have to be made understand that the system has to be highly accessible. The creation of inaccessible content may be a risk for everyone. The client should be advised to study the primary benefits of the system. Providing sufficient supporting services in order to ensure the viability of the upcoming resource Over-sophisticated technology should be avoided which would be unaffordable by the targeted customers and causes disadvantages to nobody Which option is the best? The best option is to concentrate on what is needed to be produced and how it has to be done instead of concentrating on introducing multimedia materials which would be inaccessible by the targeted customers as well as might create a chaos among the system. If not accepted by people the resources would be wasted and even the government will be affected along with the clients involved in it. References Bonnefon, J. F., Shariff, A., Rahwan, I. (2016). What Has Been Done To Decrease The Problem One Of The Largest Growing

What has been done to decrease the problem? One of the largest growing concerns in Toronto is the constantly increasing number of citizens who are finding themselves living on the streets. With the decrease in the number of available jobs, the population of homeless people has literally boomed. My questions are not as simple to answer as they may appear. Why is a large portion of our community forced to live on the streets? What has be done to decrease the problem? These are the questions I will confront in my essay. With the economical wealth attributed to the name "Canada", one would have to wonder why there is a homeless situation at all. This problem is especially evident in Canada's wealthiest city, Toronto. When it comes to the affairs of the people, it is the government who should intervene. When I look at what the government has done with regard to the homeless problem, I have to doubt that everything is being done to eradicate it. The United Nations implemented a universal d eclaration of human rights. Article 25 Section 1 of this declaration states: Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care and necessary social services, and to the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. This is a step in the right direction. However, this is not enough. These rights are subject to the discretion of the government of the country who decides to obey these universal rights. How much is "adequate"? The government, both at the federal and municipal levels, is currently working on new spending cuts. These cuts also include spending on welfare, unemployment and social services that are geared towards helping the homeless. Spending cuts can be seen as a necessity to maintain the country economically, but the reason for having a government i n the first place is to take care of the people. How can this be done when money is being taken away from those services that are necessary to uphold this obligation? Simply put, it cannot. Those obligations are served by nonprofit organizations who depend on government grants to maintain a standard of care for those who need the services. The blame cannot be placed only on the government. Such a system of assistance depends on its beneficiaries to be honest and have some integrity. Many recipients of these services attempt to "cheat the system". With no will to search for work many of these recipients remain at home and reap the benefits of their weekly cheques. This causes the government to create other services to control the amounts of money being distributed to those people. This process is costly and would be unnecessary if all of the recipients decided to take an honest approach to this service. What can the government do to decrease the homeless population? Although there is no quick and easy answer to solve this difficult problem, Toronto has the means to attempt economical ways to research and come up with ideas to solve it. Here in Ontario we have many excellent universities and colleges with equally excellent students who are taking courses in the political sciences. If the government were to cooperate with these universities and colleges and have them work in conjunction with the current research groups, then the answer to decrease the homeless population would be effectively answered. The government would encounter little expense and at the same time give the students a chance to implement what they are learning into real life situations. Everyone benefits from this idea and there are no losers. In conclusion I think that our homeless problem could eventually be rooted out entirely if everyone were to take part in the care of their fellow neighbour. If we were to stop being self-centered and start thinking about the other person who has less than us, I am sure that we would benefit from it. It isn't all that hard. Policy Ethics (W5.MJ) Essays

Policy Ethics (W5.MJ) Essays Policy Ethics (W5.MJ) Essay Policy Ethics (W5.MJ) Essay Name: Tutor: Course: Date: Policy Ethics (W5.MJ) 2. According to Hugh Helco, to ‘think institutionally’ means, learning about an institution and having utter most respect for it. Instead of thinking about an institution, one should focus on thinking within it. This means that one personalizes the institution’s values within themselves, not only sharing the views and values of the institution, but also believing in them as their own. Completely assimilating the institutional values makes one work diligently because their selflessness creates a hard-working culture within individuals. They make conscious efforts to give their best in their duties because they have a sense of belonging and work with a high level of responsibility and awareness. Therefore, people are more likely to go out of their way to ensure that the objectives are effectively accomplished. For example, if the institution wants to cut down on the energy costs, one can be proactive and suggest using solar generators as opposed to only campaigning that the lights should be switched off when not in use. Good stewardship is fostered from thinking institutionally. Why is it difficult to think institutionally in this current era? In the wake of capitalism, what appeals the most to organizations is the idea of increasing their profit margins. These organizations are run by people who by nature always want more. Without proper morals and character within them, the selfish aspirations of personal gain become apparent. Whether for personal, social political or financial reasons, the selfishness to gain institutional benefits at the expense of others makes thinking institutionally extremely difficult. Embezzling of funds by a board member discourages those working for the betterment of the organization. Such ulterior motives by individuals cause increased levels of mistrust thereby making intuitional thinking pointless. Therefore, selfish motives, which consequently lead to mistrust, hinder people from thinking institutionally. 1. According to Terry Cooper, ‘high citizenship’ is a disciplined level of social structure that enables equal power sharing opportunities among its members. In such a case, there is absolute equality among peers and respect is given to ethical values and customs within the structure. High citizenship embraces the aspect of democracy, which means exercising the power vested in the leadership to better the society. It encompasses observing a set of rules and principles that follow ethical practices thereby governing the people. For this to happen, the citizens need to be fully aware of their rights, duties and responsibilities. Here, an element of legal awareness is effected. Legal awareness is providing the necessary set of rules and principles that will help society obey the expected ethical code of conduct. This provides a platform to which understanding the ethical values will help individuals carry out their obligations rightfully. Utilitarian techniques embrace the essence of majority rule. If majority of the people will benefit from the process, then it is adapted despite the repercussions it might have on the minority. Cost benefit analyses are an example of a utilitarian technique. The pros and cons of a process or situation are taken into account. If the benefits outweigh the costs, then the process is considered and amended to suit the majority. However, this method is not suited for our political heritage because it embraces the rule of the majority, therefore, sidelining the individual liberties of the minority group. Our political heritage respects the individual rights and liberties of everyone. Implementation of utilitarian techniques, though beneficial to the greater good, contrasts the political heritage that embodies the harmony of all individuals.

Cultural and Historical Geography, Anthropogenic Change in the Research Paper

Cultural and Historical Geography, Anthropogenic Change in the Ethiopian Highlands - Research Paper Example The northwest portion that covers the Amhara and Tigray Regions, encompass the Semien-Mountains, in which a part of it is a national-park. Lake Tana, where Blue Nile springs from, also lies within the northwest part of the Ethiopian-Highlands. The Bale Mountains are situated in the Southeast of the Ethiopian Highlands, also allocated a national-park (Alemneh 6). This paper will discuss the anthropogenic change in the Ethiopian Highlands. Indigenous People Ethnically the south-western highlands, particularly in Kefa as well as to the southern Gemu Gofa, form a shatter-belt of varied ethnic factions. They encompass Omotic populaces who carry out hoe cultivation plus the plough cultivators-Oromos who inhabited the region in the 17th era (Blaikie 57). The dichotomized lowlands and valleys are occupied by a range of Sudanic and Omotic hunter gatherers, agro-pastoralists and cultivators (Alemneh 6). On top of the ethnic factions whose home lands are within this expanse, in-migration in the last 100 years has introduced numerous small groups, largely Amharas and Gurages from northern and eastern part of southwestern highlands. Majority of this in-relocation has been linked tocoffee development and land alienation (Hutchinson 34). Conflict The ethnic multiplicity of the Ethiopian Highlands creates a possibility potential for conflict since these factions have diverse interests of the resource-base, hold diverse expertise through which to employ them, and claim privileges over diverse areas and resources (Sutcliffe 44). The factions that have interests concerning the south-west resources include the local-communities and native ethnic groups, the central government and non-local ethnic factions who have relocated into this area, the novel regional administrations of Kefa and Oromia, communities from outside the area who rely on a number of the expanse's resources like irrigation water (Hutchinson 45) and (Alemneh 6). Natural Resource Use/History The Ethiopian-Highlands started to emerge 75m ages ago, as molten rock from the Globe's mantle elevated a broad roof of the African Craton ancient rocks. The Great Rift Valley opening split the roof of the Ethiopian-Highlands into 3 parts; the southern Arabian-Peninsula Mountains are geographically part of the primeval Ethiopian-Highlands, divided by the rifting that created the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, and detached Arabia from Africa(see figure 2) (Blaikie 57) and (Alemneh 6). Ethiopian highlands are very rich with respect to natural reserves. The region can be viewed as among the last reserve frontiers within the country that is being utilized with boosted intensity whilst the population swells and deforestation ensues (Blaikie 57). The sources to this reserve prosperity are the great and consistent rainfall plus the forest-cover. The cover from the forest, by shielding the loams from wearing away, has assisted the red-clay soils of this region develop to above 2 meters in profundity. The rainfall and s oil resources afford the southwestern highlands an extremely considerable agricultural prospective for an extensive variety of crops, together with coffee, whereas the dependability of crop produces is great unlike in several other regions of Ethiopia (Gedion 95) and (Alemneh 6). Owing to the environmental settings, the southern-west highlands possess a strong relative advantage in production of timber. They contain roughly half of Ethiopian’s remaining high forestry that produces quality wood for furniture (Blaikie 57). The consumption of

Project - Assignment Example dging, clearing up bushes, aiding in forest fires’ management, digging up trenches and holes, soil grading by landscapers, mining, and for lifting heavy material. Excavators are such useful machines used to make work easy for human activity. They are used mainly to do the hard jobs in the construction field, which are impossible for human beings and other excavating machines. Therefore, this implies that the material used should be strong and tough enough, to resist the stresses introduced on the dipper and boom while the excavator is at work (Degarmo, Black and Kohser). Otherwise, the excavator may not serve its purpose effectively if weak materials were chosen for fabrication purposes. Another main factor of consideration in the material choice for the excavator fabrication is the cost implication. The material should be cheaply available yet strong and tough enough. The low cost of material will ensure that the excavator is availed for use at affordable prices. However, this notwithstanding, the cost implications of the material should not limit the fabrication process. If at all cheap materials are not available, an alternative strong and tough material ought to be used, even if they are expensive. Nevertheless, this should come as a last resort for the design team. Having stated the preliminary factors of consideration in the material choice as above, suitable material of choice for the fabrication of the boom and dipper of the excavator is mild steel. Steel is known for its high strength, and 2% carbon content in mild steel improves its toughness. Therefore, in comparison with cast iron, mild steel is tougher and stronger, making it more adaptable to hardy conditions like those, which an excavator is exposed to in the course of its use. Mild steel can withstand high stress, and that is why it is preferable. In addition to that, mild still is relatively cheap and easily available. It is one of the commonest metals, which can be found easily across

The store went so far as to list a fake London address for the company headquarters. Today, Victorias Secret enjoys nearly a monopoly position on the retail of intimate apparel in the US. The typical bra that once sold for $15 at Victorias Secret, when the company first opened and was worried about competition, now sells for over $40. Victorias Secrets Success Starting from Raymonds six stores, Victorias Secret has grown into a giant in the lingerie business. As my colleague just explained VS has virtually no competitors in the womens elegant lingerie market. In the more general category of all underwear, Victorias Secrets sales also tower over the sales of all other underwear brands. Victorias Secrets success is evident in the numbers. Not only does Victorias Secret dominate in its own market, it has also become the fastest growing branch in the Limited family. To understand the success of Victorias Secret, it is necessary to look at the forces in the lingerie industry. First, a range of complements contribute to increasing demand. Complements range from Britney Spears and MTV to perfume, basically anything that is sexually suggestive. The acceptable boundary for sexuality has with these complements been raised higher and higher. Along with this, the media has elevated the position of intimate apparel in our society. Magazines like Cosmo and Glamour advise women to pamper themselves with nice underwear as one of lifes secret survival tips. Bras and panties are commodities that need to be replaced at a modestly frequent level. Therefore, there is no concern for the intimate apparel industry of a decline in demand. The industry is not rivalrous either. Bras are priced over a fairly broad range with high markups. Firms in this industry have very high profit margins. Furthermore, neither the buyers who are women shoppers nor their husbands who are buying gifts have much bargaining power. Suppliers for the intimate apparel industry similarly have very little bargaining power because of the large number of manufacturers and few big buyers. Supermodels who can be considered suppliers in the highly-advertised lingerie business certainly do not have bargaining power, especially when it comes to Victorias Secret. Most models consider it a prestigious honor to be a Victorias Secret model. There is more supply (models) than demand in this case. For such a lucrative industry, there are surprisingly few competitors in the US market. Besides Fredericks of Hollywood, there are no other lingerie retail chain stores. Victorias Successful Marketing Campaign Advertising One of Victorias Secrets strengths is its very successful advertising strategy. In a business that sells an image and a lifestyle, advertising is crucial. Victorias Secret spends $66 million each year on advertising, essentially defining beauty and packaging it for consumers. Thousands of newspaper ads, catalogues, and televised fashion shows convince women that buying Victorias Secret products will boost their confidence and enhance their appeal. A Victorias Secret product represents fun, romance, fantasy, desire and love all in one. As long as they do Victorias Secret lingerie, women can be transformed like Cinderella from the ties of domestic life to one of the angels seen on the walkway. Annual Fashion Show Televised annually, the Victorias Secret Fashion Show Extravaganza has an exclusive contract with nationwide broadcasting station CBS. A symbiotic relationship exists between the two firms. Victorias Secret obtains one hour of nationwide advertising, while CBS holds the exclusive right to one of the most popular programs on TV. For one full hour, beautiful supermodels parade about in Victorias new-line of beautiful lingerie with chic special effects and music that heightens the fashion show to the level of a Broadway production. Women are persuaded that Victorias Secret lingerie will win the enthusiasm they see plainly in their male colleagues. The Supermodels Victorias Secret holds one of the most important input supplies in the lingerie industry: supermodels. Victorias Secret models are synonymous with beauty. Advertisements capitalize on this association and cement in consumer minds that Victorias Secret represents beauty and class. The fact that Victorias Secret has most of the top supermodels working for them is no surprise. Nobody boasts of Banana Republic models or GAP models, but mention Victorias Secret models and everybody gushes about how gorgeous they are. Being a Victorias Secret supermodel is a sign of prestige. Like the top animators who are honored to work for Disney, talented models are enthusiastic about signing up with Victorias Secret because it guarantees them a successful name and chance to be named in an elite group of supermodels, including the likes of Adrianna Lima, Heidi Klum, and Tyra Banks. In order to keep good business flowing, stores need strong marketing strategies. If they do not have people coming into their stores, they obviously will not have much business. Victorias Secret is well aware of this, and they constantly give customers reasons to visit by sending them coupons, special offers, and best of all free stuff! 1. Freebies:ÂÂ  The Free Panty coupon is one of the customers favourite methods. Victorias Secret sends these coupons out every month to all of their customers, and the best thing about this coupon is that there is no purchase necessary. Many times when stores give out coupons to receive free items, it is required that you buy something first. However, people love this particular offer because they can receive a free panty just by walking into the store and handing over the coupon. How does this help Victorias Secret?ÂÂ  Giving away a free item gives customers a reason to go into the store. There arent too many people who will just go in the store, get their free item, and then walk out. Every time one goes in to claim their prize, they always end up stopping to look around at everything else (and usually end up falling in love with something that they really did not need). One ends up spending money every time, and thats a nice profit for Victorias Secret. Theyve gained more business just by handing out a small panty that most likely costs them very little! 2. Exclusive, Limited-Time Coupons:ÂÂ  Another one of their great techniques is when they send coupons for 10 dollars off any Pink purchase. In this situation, customers would receive $10 off any Pink brand item bought in the store. Pink is extremely popular for Victorias Secret, and theres a wide selection in this line. Theres something for everyone. Why not see if you can save on a higher-priced item you may have had your eye on? How does this help Victorias Secret?ÂÂ  They may provide $10 off, but theyre getting you to spend money there. Again, the incentive gets customers through the door and the sought-after merchandise urges them to stick around and do some more shopping. 3. Clearance or Bargain Sales:ÂÂ  Victorias Secret also holds their Semi Annual Sales to drum up business. These sales occur in the winter time (usually every January) and also every summer. These sales are huge (some ladies ransack the displays to find the best deals) and they get tons of people into their store. Many of the items that go on sale during this time are usually discounted between 40 and 70%. People who love Victorias Secret go crazy over these prices, because on a regular day, their prices arent usually that cheap. How does this help Victorias Secret?ÂÂ  Bargain-hunting customers usually buy as many pairs of unmentionables as they can which not only brings in cash but also clears out previous-season merchandise. This frees up space for new designs, which people catch previews of while theyre waiting in line to pay for their purchases. 4. Incremental Incentives:ÂÂ  Not every patron sees the appeal of waiting in lines for the best prices, and VS understands that. Thats why they incorporate online-only deals. For example, they may give a $15 discount for every $100 spent, $30 off for every $150 spent, or maybe even $75 off for $250 spent. This incremental technique is another way for the store to gain new business. How does this help Victorias Secret?ÂÂ  Incremental incentivesÂÂ  encourage people to buy more for a price break or discount. This is especially beneficial for customers who may be near a price break lets say you have $90 worth of merchandise in your cart. Wouldnt you be likely to add one more item if you knew you could then use the coupon for $15 off? I would.

Ethics And Issues Essay

How should schools deal with Internet plagiarism? There are many ways as to how a school can deal with internet plagiarism. Firstly, they should teach their students the importance of writing a fair work and the worth of hard work it has. Students need to know that any piece written by them is their own accomplished hard work that is entirely original. In such a way, they have learned the essential elements of the work that the school teacher wanted them to work on. In other words, they have succeeded in meeting the requirements of the coursework, no matter what grade they get. Secondly, teachers should highly emphasize on the topic of ethics and ethical writing to the students. Apart from these, a school has to be up-to-date regarding the different ways as to how the students plagiarize. Keeping a track on the past papers of the previous is one way. The other is to use anti-plagiarism software today. The popular software used these days by the universities is Turnitin. com or Mydropbox. com. Students should be taught that plagiarism is a crime and is equivalent to stealing. Altering digital photos: Art or Fraud  Similar to plagiarizing, altering digital photos is fraud and can earn even legal consequences if used for financial or academic gains. Altering digital photos and stating it as your own work is like stealing someone else’s work, making some additions and stating it as your own. Just as the painting of Mona Lisa will always be the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, no matter how altered it is, any work done on anybody’s presently done work is a crime. In my opinion, altering digital photos can never be an art but a fraud because the original work is done by someone else. Photojournalism is mostly subjected to this fraud. If altering digital photos was to be considered as art, many people would misuse it to present as legal evidences. Since the natures of digital photos are, in a way, alterable, these pieces are never considered as a piece of legal evidence. Software have been developed where any alter in the digital images are spotted and traced that avoids altering of any digital piece as well (Pearson, 2006). Altering any image or piece for one’s own benefit in order to gain money is a crime, thus a fraud and not an art. Just as a re-mix music cannot be regarded as an original piece of art, altering digital photos, too cannot be regarded as an art.

Assignment: Economics Essay

1. Economists in Funlandia, a closed economy, have collected the following information about the economy for a particular year: Economists also estimate that the investment function is:  where r is the country’s real interest rate, expressed as a percentage. Calculate private saving, public saving, national saving, investment, and the equilibrium interest rate. Please note: national savings is not related to the interest rate, which means that the supply curve for loanable funds is vertical. (15 points) Private Savings= Y-T-C 10000-1500-6000= 2500 Public Saving= T-G 1500-1700= -200 National Saving= S=(Y-T-C)+(T-G)=(10000-1500-6000)+(1500-1700)= 2300 Investing= I=Y-C-G 10000-6000-1700= 2300 Real interest rate I = 3,300-100r , 100r = 3,300-I 100r = 3,300-2300 ( I=2300) 100r = 1000 100r/100 = 1000/100 (dividing it by 100) r = 10 2. In the summer of 2010, Congress passed a far-reaching financial reform to prevent another financial crisis like the one experienced in 2008-2009. Consider the following possibilities: a. Suppose that, by requiring firms to comply with strict regulations, the bill increases the costs of investment. On a well-labeled graph, show the consequences of the bill on the market for loanable funds. Be sure to specify changes in the equilibrium interest rate and the level of saving and investment. What are the effects of the bill on long-run economic growth (recall: higher investment would increase capital and capital per worker)? (7 points) i. The demand loanable would decline along with the equilibrium. The saving and investments will decline as well hence giving the economy a lower rate for the future. ii. b. Suppose, on the other hand, that by effectively regulating the financial system, the bill increases savers’ confidence in the financial system. Show the consequences of the policy in this situation on a new graph, again noting changes in the equilibrium interest rate and the level of saving and investment. Again evaluate the effects on long run growth. (7 points) i. The supply of loanable funds would increase. The interest rate will decrease while the savings and investments will increase. Which will let the economy growth for the future, ii. Problems for Chapter 14 3. According to an old myth, Native Americans sold the island of Manhattan 400 years ago for $24. If they had access to a financial investment that yielded an interest rate of 7% per year, how much would they have today? (8 points) a. (1.07)^400 x 24= $13.6 Trillion 4. For each of the following kinds of insurance, give an example of a behavior that can be called moral hazard and another example of behavior that can be called adverse selection: a. Medical insurance (6 points) i. A sick person is more likely to apply to medical insurance compared to a healthy person. Meaning it’s an adverse selection. A healthy person may get health insurance too but now he may less likely to take care of himself, this would be a moral hazard. b. Car insurance (6 points) i. A risky driver is more likely to apply for car insurance, this would be an adverse selection. Or once a driver has insurance, they may be driving more reckless, this would be a moral hazrd. 5. For each of the following pairs of bonds, which bond would you expect to pay a higher interest rate? Explain. (5 points each) a. A bond of the US government or a bond of an Eastern European government i. Eastern European because non-US bonds will include risk premiums and also have higher interest rates b. A bond that repays the principal in 2015 or a bond that  repays the principal in 2040 i. 2040 because higher maturity requires higher interest rate. c. A bond from Coca-Cola or a bond from a software company that run in your garage i. The software company due to not being well known so it would be a higher interest rate. d. A bond issued by the federal government or a bond issued by the state of New York i. Definitely federal government because they are not tax-exempted compared to municipal bonds 6. When company executives buy and sell stock based on private information they obtain as part of their jobs, they are engaged in insider trading. a. Give an example of inside information that might be useful for buying or selling stock. (6 points) i. Information on new products or any government involvement that may affect the firm b. Those who trade stocks based on inside information usually earn very high rates of return. Does this fact violate the efficient markets hypothesis? (6 points) i. Who does trade with inside information is not violating the efficient market hypothesis. The hypothesis includes all available information about the future of the firm. Inside information is not available to the public meaning the price of the stock doesn’t reflect this. c. Insider trading is illegal. Why do you suppose that is? (5 points) i. It’s illegal for sure due to the fact that it gives others an unfair advantage over everyone else who doesn’t have access to this. 7. Jamal has a utility function , where W is his wealth in millions of dollars and U is the utility that he obtains. a. Graph Jamal’s utility function. Is he risk averse? Explain. (7 points) i. 1. He is risk averse because of his chances of getting more money for more risk. b. In the final stage of a game show, the host offers Jamal a choice between: i. $4 million for sure ii. A gamble that pays $1 million with 60% probability and $9 million with 40% probability Should Jamal pick choice i or choice ii? Hint: evaluate the utility that Jamal would expect to receive in choice i and choice ii. Jamal would expect to receive utility in the amount of the weighted average of the possible outcomes, where the probabilities are the weights. (7 points) E(Utility) = 0.6*U(1000000) + 0.4*U(9000000) = 0.6*0 + 0.4*1 = 0.4 Jamel should pick option one because he has a only 40% in order to get the 9 million but it might not worth it because he could end up back at 1 million.

The Impact Of The Industrial Revolution On The World

The Impact of the Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was an era in the mid-eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries that allowed an extension of the ideas of the Scientific Revolution to the rest of European society. More specifically, in the words of Robert Strayer, the Industrial Revolution saw â€Å"a breakthrough of unprecedented proportions that made available for human use, at least temporarily, immensely greater quantities of energy†. The Industrial Revolution, despite the obvious, direct negative effects it held for the working class, was in fact more beneficial for the working class in an indirect and therefore more enduring way. One can see this in the benefits the I.R. held for working class people’s livelihood, and the increased public awareness of the working class to which it led. The Industrial Revolution increased the livelihood of the working class and the means by which they could flourish. A common assumption many people hold is that the Industrial Revolution greatly benefited the wealthy and ground the poor into dirt. Actually, according to historian Thomas S. Ashton, â€Å"it would have been strange, indeed, if the industrial revolution had simply made the rich richer and the poor poorer. For the commodities to which it gave rise were not, in general, luxuries, but necessities and capital goods†. Ashton attests that the goods that the Industrial Revolution created were consumed just as much by the working class as by the wealthy.
